Preface:
I developed the attached material dealing with Diné Bizaad for the purpose of bringing together a series of units dealing with Instruction of the Navajo Language. I have been a teacher of Navajo Language since my days as a Navajo Code Talker in World War II. Since that time, in my various teaching assignments, I have had difficulty in finding adequate teaching tools to be used in Navajo Language classrooms.
This contribution is designed not only for my use in my classroom but also is available for any person to use whom teaches or who wishes to learn more about Navajo Language. It is important that we share materials we develop and thereby can profit from additional understandings and additional points of view. As a result, the materials that we use in the classrooms will be more effective than if we tried to keep it and make it only available to the producing school.
This is but the first publication the Navajo Studies Center will make in the area of Diné Bizaad. As we continue to teach and learn from our students, we will produce other publications in this field.
Some of the materials contained in this book deals with particular students enrolled in beginning classes. We have made no attempt to leave out such materials but instructors should understand that not all materials contained in this book would be coherent with their curriculum. Yet most of the material can be used anywhere. This material is to be used as a starting point both in teaching and lesson plans.
