Introduction To The Third Printing:
The former Rough Rock Demonstration School is now known as the Rough Rock Community School; yet, the school still has as its major focus, besides emphasizing academics, the teaching of Navajo culture and language.
In the year 2003 the Rough Rock Community School is authorized by the Education Committee of the Navajo Nation to recruit students from throughout the entire 110 chapters which comprise the Navajo reservation. The reason for this allowance is because the Rough Rock Community School has the finest and most developed Navajo Studies program of any of the 240 schools serving the Navajo Nation. Our school is the only school allowed to recruit students from the entire Navajo reservation because of its exemplary Navajo Studies program.
At this point in time, there have been many changes in Navajo land since the start of the Rough Rock Demonstration School in 1968. Yet, today there is even a greater need for Navajo students and adults to know who they are. In the current age of technology and science, it is especially important for the old saying "know thyself" be practiced and believed. Today we know that knowledge of the Navajo culture and language is an asset not a liability. Today research clearly shows that knowledge of Navajo culture and language has a positive impact on academic achievement at both high school and college level.
The Rough Rock Community School rededicate the book to all Navajos who are proud of who they are and show it.
