CHAPTER ONE: The First Navajos
Today, there are more than 150,000 Navajos. They live in almost every part of the United States. Most Navajos live on the Navajo Reservation. This is part of the land where they have always lived. It is in northern New Mexico and Arizona, and southern Utah. The map on p. 2 shows the size of the reservation compared to the United States.
Scientists call the Navajos Athapaskans. They are called this because they speak a language called Athapaskan. This language is like one spoken by people in Alaska and Canada. People who live along the northern coast of the Pacific Ocean also speak a language like the Navajos. The Apaches speak a language like Navajo, too. All these languages are like Navajo, and all these people are called Athapaskans. Athapaskans are like a big family or clan. Can you find the Athapaskans on the map on p.5?
