The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Legislative Council voted on March 7th to require EVERY coach to complete the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coach Education Program or an approved equivalent. All head and assistant coaches hired before April 1st, 2009, whether paid or volunteer, must complete the training before the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year. Coaches hired after April 1st, 2009 have 45 days from the date of hire to complete the training. (Source: http://www.aiaonline.org/)
RRCS / AIA Requirements:
All participants in interscholastic activities must be in compliance
with all student eligibility rules. These eligibility rules include
enrollment, attendance, domicile, transfer, recruiting, academic and
scholarship, age limit/birth record, physical examination,
parent/guardian consent, student insurance/student insurance waiver,
amateur standing, clinic/summer camps, competition on school sports only
and try-outs.
Parent Participation: We want parents to play an active role in student
athletics, both as a spectator and as an interactive part in their
students’ athletic endeavor. Interactive means, parents and school staff
need to communicate and coordinate on a routine basis with coaches and
athletic director.
Additionally, cost for equipment, travel, transportation, lodging, food,
and athletic membership sometimes occur. Request of parents to
participate in-part or in-full to recover the cost may arise.
The school district will always be responsible for student athletes that
live in the “Dorm.” This means we will take care of lodging, food, and
transportation home.
Those student athletes that are “Day” students will be required to make
their own arrangements home after all athletic events. Students will not
be allowed to participate in their sport, if full compliance to pick-up
and transport from school to home after the athletic events or contest
(regardless of the time the athletic event ends). The coach and/or
athletic director will be responsible for making all necessary
arrangements for transportation with parents.
Academics and Scholarship Rule: A student must be enrolled in four
credit classes and have received passing grades in all credit earning
courses. Seniors who are on track to graduate may enroll in two
credit-earning classes and still be eligible. Grading periods and
eligibility will be one week in length. A grade of “F” is considered
non-passing and will render a student ineligible. However, eligibility
may be regained at next eligibility reporting cycle if there are no
failing grades on the report.
Birth Certificate – Age limit: If a student becomes 19 years of age
after September 1st, he/she is eligible for the remainder of the school
year, and if he/she becomes 19 of age on or before September 1st, he/she
is not eligible for any part of that school year. A birth certificate
must be on file in the Athletic Office for all sports and AIA sanctioned
programs.
Domicile Rule: A student is privileged with eligibility for
interscholastic competition only at the school in which his/her parents
are domiciled.
Competition on school Team Sports Only: A student who is a member of a
school team shall not practice or compete with any other group, club,
organization, association, etc. For purposes of this rule, the
interscholastic seasons of competition shall begin with the first
regularly scheduled game and conclude with that particular team’s final
game. Any student violating the above rule shall forfeit his/her
eligibility for a minimum of the balance of the season for that sport or
up to a maximum of one calendar year.
Eight Semesters Eligibility Rule: A student is privileged with
eligibility for four seasons in each sport and/or activity and for no
more than eight semesters of eligibility after he/she enrolls in the
ninth grade. The 7th and 8th semesters must be consecutive. The other
semesters of eligibility need not be consecutive.
Insurance: Students must show proof of insurance or Indian Health
Waiver.
Participation in Athletics: Parents are responsible to inform the
school/coaching staff of any student illness or injury that may have an
impact on the student’s health and safety during participation in
physical education and the athletic programs.
Physicals: Students must complete a physical exam by a medical doctor
and have the results on file before being issued equipment and before
beginning practice.
