"Finished Rug on a Loom"We have just finished one of the murals that we are working on in the design class for our room in the high school. It is of a scene of a newly finished rug on a loom. At first glance it is an attractive rug ready to be taken off down to go to the trading post. However, if you look closer it tells a little story. At the bottom next to the sheepskin, one will see an old metal pan with nalli's yarn that has been rolled up to be put away now that the rug is finished and also a little doll next to the bottom of the loom. To me, it shows how the little grandchild sat next to her grandmother while skilled hands created the weaving. I like to think of it as showing the interaction of the young and the old and way that the teaching of traditions are handed down. It started off just as a design project done by a student, but I
liked the design so much that we decided to paint it on the wall. We
liked that so much, that we turned the pattern into the painted mural
incorporating the rug into a scene.
